James Chambers
Anton Horner
Friedrich Gumpert

Welcome. The horn is a noble instrument and those of us who play it are fortunate. Anton Horner, one of the greatest players and teachers of the horn in the last century said "God made some of us horn players, others were not so lucky".

This website is for the benefit of my horn students and their parents. Other hornists are welcome visitors.

Parents, I hope you will take time to look the site over. I will be including information that will help you as you encourage your developing hornist.

I teach horn in the tradition of my teacher, James Sours, who was a student of James Chambers, who was a student of Anton Horner, who was a student of Friedrich Gumpert. As you can see, it is a long and distinguished line of musicians. My goal is to pass on to students the heritage of the horn as it was given to me by these great teachers.

By way of introduction, I am a graduate of Southern Nazarene University. I have played professionally and have worked as a high school band director for many years. I am also a clinician for Sibelius music software and the founder of R.G. Smith Music Engraving and Publishing (www.rgsmithmusic.com)

Students are taught in my home in Oklahoma City or in my band room. For other information please visit the Frequently Asked Questions page.
