I prefer horns of the Krüspe design with large bell throats. Of the currently produced models I prefer (in descending order):

Although I play on a Conn 8D, my fisrt choice of current models is the Hoyer. They are well made and consistently sound good. I strongly reccomend them over the Conn or Yamaha. These are all production line horns that are fairly easy to find. They are usually well made and play well. All are priced similarly. I have no preference for fixed or screw bell.

I have not included any of the custom hand made horns. They are much higher in price. Students should be very serious and somewhat mature before considering one. Several custom makers are listed on the links page.

One quick word about cases. High school musician can be hard on horns. Until the student is out of high school, use a case, not a bag.
