Mouthpieces

Many students start with a school owned instrument. Big changes can be made by using a quality mouthpiece. They can be found at most good music stores or ordered from the maker. One with a screw rim, if available, is slightly more expensive but is a better choice. Here are some good choices.

  • Moosewood A8
  • Moosewood A11
  • Shilke 30
  • Shilke 31
  • Laskey F Series
  • Holton Farkas MDC
  • Holton Farkas MC

Better players often play on hand made mouthpieces. Although they are usually more expensive, most play better and are worth the greater investment. This list is not exhaustive but are mouthpieces I have found to work well.

  • Moosewood     Tom Greer makes great mouthpieces and he is a wealth of information. He will make good suggestions after talking with you.
  • John Stork Myers Series      John Stork made mouthpieces for Giardinelli years ago when they were custom made. He can make all of the old Giardinelli models. The Myers series was designed for Philip Myers of the NY Philharmonic. They are large mouthpieces that make a wonderful sound in the hands of a mature player.
  • Walter Lawson     The Lawson mouthpieces have cups that are more shallow than I prefer but produce excellent results. I have an S 670 that they bored out (#9 drill) that I use with success. I asked for a bigger bore but Walter suggested I try the #9 first. He was right. These guys know their stuff!
